on sunday the first season of Dexter finished airing on like..CBS or whatever? the networks here are a little mixed up for some reason. anyway though, they played the last two episodes in a row, which was awesome. i've read the first two Dexter books and they were super-awesome and intelligent. i used to have some problems watching the show, because it's a lot different from the books. i wont ruin it for people who havent seen it or read the books, but the first season pretty much follows the book, with a few detours. except that the finale was almost completely different. the setting was different and the whole thing with the Ice Truck Killer ended a bit differently than it did in the book. it made me mad because the sequence of events took a strange turn, and had Dexter in kind of a different possition than at the end of the books. like...the end of the first book is like, staggering. you read it and you're like, "what. the. fuck." and it has a huge emotional climax. but the end of the season was just like, "oh. okay."
i guess my problem with the show is that they revealed everything a bit too soon. you knew who the Ice Truck Killer was like 5 episodes before it ended, which took the magic out of it for me. i was disappointed too at the fact that the setting for the final showdown was different.
***SPOILERS***
the fact that Dexter meets his brother NOT in the container thingy was alllll wrong. they even addressed in the show that the storage container at the dock was "the place they were born". so why take Dexter to that HOUSE? it just doesnt make any sense at all. i dont understand. if i had been directing that show, he would have gone to the docks, found the container, opened the doors, and you would immediately see the scene when he was a kid that started the whole thing. you'd see him sitting in 2 inches of blood, and you'd see his mom dead, all chopped-in-half and whatnot (idk if you'd really be able to tell if she was chopped in half, because her bottom half would be hidden behind a box or something). and then before the camera pans over to reveal the other kid in the box, he'd get pulled back into reality and you'd finally see the Ice Truck Killer holding Debra hostage. and then finally it would go back into the memory and pan over to reveal another kid sitting beside Dexter.
and the whole business with Dexter framing Paul was pretty unnecessary as well. that is something reckless that Dexter would NEVER do. if he were to dispose of Paul, he would do it professionally. i know that is one of those things that has to go on in the TV show to keep everything interesting, though so maybe i can forgive it, although the end with Rita finding the boot outside and everything kind of got on my nerves. it does make me want to watch the second season though, so the producers of the show did their jobs.
***END SPOILERS***
so i guess i was just disappointed in it! there were some really really good things about it though. Michael C. Hall totally pulled it off as usual. he's a brilliant actor. the actor that plays Debra is good too - she had the difficult job of playing a character that is supposed to be horribly annoying. the guy they have playing Doaks is perfect too - you always want to fucking punch him in the face.
i think this show is really, really good though. in the end i can let go of the book and just sink into the TV world of Dexter, which is just as darkly brilliant as the novel. it really is a perfectly crafted television show with a sick sense of humor. idk if they're airing the second season on regular tv...but i know the third season is about to start on Showtime soon. it figures that as soon as i find an awesome show, we cancel the Showtime package thing. oh welll.
